Melamine vs Plywood vs Blockboard vs Aluminium Honeycomb
There is no universally best cabinet material. The right choice depends on your budget, exposure to moisture, finish, design and the quality of the complete cabinet system.
What each material means
- Melamine-faced particleboard: a decorative melamine surface over particleboard. Affordable and versatile, but exposed particleboard edges are vulnerable to prolonged moisture.
- Plywood: thin wood veneers bonded in layers. Strength and moisture performance vary by species, grade and adhesive.
- Blockboard: a core of wood strips faced with veneers or other layers. Core quality and construction affect stability and fastener performance.
- Aluminium honeycomb: aluminium skins with a honeycomb core. The aluminium does not swell like wood, but overall durability still depends on edges, connections, fittings and workmanship.
Questions to ask your cabinet maker
Ask for the exact panel thickness, board grade, edge finishing, hardware model, installation method, warranty terms and itemized inclusions. Compare like for like rather than judging by a single material name.
