E0, E1 and Formaldehyde: What Do These Labels Mean?

Formaldehyde is associated with some wood-based panel adhesives. Emission classifications are intended to describe measured emissions under specified test methods.

Why labels alone are not enough

E1 is used in some standards, while labels such as E0 or ENF may refer to different regional schemes or manufacturer claims. They are not interchangeable without the applicable standard and test method. “E0” should not be treated as proof of zero formaldehyde.

What to request

Ask for the certificate or laboratory report identifying the product, issuing body, test method, measured result and validity. Ventilation and other indoor sources also affect overall indoor air quality.
